I taught high school Math in White River for 5 years, had a kiddo, and recently started teaching middle school Math in Murdo, SD. I am also hoping to get back into teaching piano lesson, but know I have some tough decisions to make to avoid burnout. ReplyDeleteMy name is Amanda Bast. I teach high school English in Highmore. I just began my 9th year of teaching. I have dealt with burnout on and off over the years, but finally am beginning to feel that I have things (mostly) under control. I have been trying to discipline myself to be focused for the time I'm at school rather than focusing in and out on things throughout the day. I know that in order for me to go home without homework most nights, I need to keep my thoughts corralled and really plug in to my grading when I have small snatches of time throughout the day and when school is over instead of taking short mental breaks during down time. I know myself well enough to know that I get distracted easily if I don't have a plan or purpose, so I've been trying to make my to-do list throughout the day and stick to that list so that I can go home and relax. I'm hoping that this book study will give me some new insights and skills to help me with my time management, and maybe a new perspective on the work that I do. :)

I taught 2 years in Haakon County in rural schools grades K-8 and then I taught 32 years of Special Education Birth through age 21 in Armour until I took early retirement this past year. I still sub in Armour and in the Corsica-Stickney School District. I have 3 grown children, one married with 2 girls. I've worked with JA for 19 years - recruiting and equipping volunteers to go into K-12 classrooms to teach students about work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Although I'm not a classroom teacher, I keep up my teaching certificate as it helps me in a variety of ways. I'm excited for this book study as I'm hopeful the content will help me as I manage my team and projects at work as well as at home.
